Dark circles: why they happen and how much cosmetics can do

Three kinds of dark circles, three kinds of answers. Where eye cream helps, where sleep and sunscreen do, and where nothing will: the honest version.

Shopping for a "dark circle removal cream" ends in disappointment for one reason: not all dark circles are the same thing. Look in the mirror first and find yours.

Three kinds

  • Bluish/purple: blood vessels showing through thin skin. Worse with little sleep, screens and colds. More in the morning, less by afternoon.
  • Brown: pigment in the skin itself. Worse with sun, rubbing, itching and allergies. On South Asian skin this is the most common.
  • Shadow: a deep eye socket or a hollow cheek casts a shadow. It changes with the light, not with cream.

What can be done for each

How to apply eye cream

  • A grain of rice, pressed in with the ring finger, no dragging.
  • On the orbital bone, not right at the lash line.
  • Retinal eye cream at night only; start with two or three nights a week.

Are eye patches worth it?

A 15-minute patch in the morning is good for puffiness and dryness: before an event, after a short night. Patches do not change anything lasting. — Numbuzin No.9 NAD+ Collagen Under Eye Patches

Honest expectations

Brown circles can lighten in 8–12 weeks; bluish ones reach "less noticeable". Gone completely: no cream's claim is true.

Sudden, on one eye, or with swelling or pain: not a cosmetics matter, see a doctor.

Sources

  • American Academy of Dermatology: dark circles come from genetics, thin skin, sun and rubbing; sunscreen and no rubbing are the first steps.
  • Published studies show topical retinoids slightly thickening the skin over months.
Cosmetics only, never medical advice.
