The "10-step Korean routine" is a marketing line. Most people in Korea live on four to six steps. The rule is simple: thin to thick, protect in the morning, repair at night.
Morning (4 steps, 5 minutes)
- 1Cleanser: water or a light low-pH gel. — COSRX Low pH Good Morning Gel Cleanser 150ml
- 2Toner: press in with your hands; move on while the skin is still damp. — Round Lab Birch Juice Moisturizing Toner 300ml
- 3Moisturiser: gel for oily skin, cream for dry.
- 4Sunscreen: two finger-lengths, never skipped. — Beauty of Joseon Relief Sun Aqua-Fresh Rice+B5 50ml
Night (5 steps)
- 1Double cleansing: oil, then foam (guide).
- 2Toner
- 3Essence / serum: this is where your "working" ingredient goes. For beginners, snail mucin or hyaluronic acid: every skin type tolerates them. — Jumiso Snail Mucin 95 + Peptide Facial Essence 50ml
- 4Moisturiser: a little richer at night is fine. — COSRX Advance Snail 92 All In One Cream 100g
- 5(Optional, 2–3 nights a week) one active: retinol, BHA or vitamin C. One, not together. — Anua Retinol 0.3% + Niacin Renewing Serum 30ml
How to remember the order
Thin as water → milky → cream. The thinnest goes first. Sunscreen is always last in the morning, makeup after it.
How long to wait
- No waiting between steps; apply the next while the skin is damp, it absorbs better.
- Only after retinol or an acid, give it two or three minutes, then moisturiser.
What to buy in month one (three things)
- One low-pH cleanser, one moisturiser, one sunscreen. That alone is 80% of the result.
- In month two add one serum for your concern: acne, dark spots, dark circles.
- Not sure of your skin type? The Skin Advisor takes two minutes; then build your own set and the AI says what goes with what.
What not to do
- Five new products in one day. One at a time, two weeks apart.
- Scrubs or peels more than three times a week.
- Dropping sunscreen in winter.
Sources
- The American Academy of Dermatology's basic routine: cleanser, moisturiser, sunscreen; the rest as needed.
- Moisturiser on damp skin holds water better, standard dermatology advice.
