Korean moisturisers and toners for oily skin: what to look for
Dry the skin out to cut oil and it makes more. Which textures, which ingredients, which to avoid, with five picks for Dhaka heat.

The biggest misunderstanding about oily skin: "moisturiser will make it oilier." The opposite is true. Dry the skin out and it makes more sebum to compensate. The goal is not zero oil; it is water without oil.
Toner: what to look for
- Alcohol-free. Alcohol feels matte at first, then dries the skin and the oil climbs.
- Ingredients: niacinamide (oil and pores), tea tree or heartleaf (calming), PHA or mild BHA (clear pores), a little witch hazel.
- Texture: watery; "milky" toners are for dry skin.
- Picks: Medicube Zero Pore Toner 250ML, SKIN1004 Madagascar Centella Tea-Trica Purifying Toner 210ml
Moisturiser: what to look for
- Gel or gel-cream, labelled "oil-free" or "lightweight".
- Ingredients: hyaluronic acid, glycerin, centella, niacinamide; a little ceramide is fine.
- Avoid: heavy butters (shea), coconut oil, mineral oil high up the list.
- Picks: IUNIK Centella Calming Gel Cream 60ml (gel cream), Anua Heartleaf 70 Daily Lotion 200ml (lotion, for the body too)
The routine
- 1Morning: low-pH gel cleanser → toner → gel moisturiser → matte sunscreen — Anua Zero-Cast Moisturizing Finish Sunscreen SPF 50 50ml
- 2Night: double cleansing → toner → (BHA two or three nights a week) → gel moisturiser
- 3Shine at midday: blotting paper, not powder; powder settles into pores.
The truth about pores
Pore size is genetic; "pore minimising" products do not shrink pores, they keep them clear so they look smaller. Regular BHA and sunscreen: that is as far as it goes.
Dehydrated oily skin
Shiny, yet tight after washing, sometimes flaky: low on water, high on oil. The fix: two layers of hydrating toner, a light moisturiser, an even gentler cleanser. Stop strong actives for two weeks.

- American Academy of Dermatology: moisturise daily even with oily skin; look for "oil-free" and "non-comedogenic"; avoid alcohol-based toners.
- Published studies on niacinamide show reduced sebum production at 2–4% over a few weeks.
