Sheet masks: when, how often, which one, and why 30 minutes backfires

A sheet mask is not skincare, it is a hydration boost. Fifteen minutes, two or three times a week, ingredients by skin type, what to do with the leftover serum. Expensive does not mean better.

The sheet mask is the most photographed part of the Korean routine and the most misused. It is a 15-minute hydration boost: not a substitute for the daily routine, not a remedy for marks or acne.

When

  • At night, after cleansing and toner, before serum and cream.
  • The night before a big day, after a short night, after sun exposure, the day after retinol or acids (to calm).
  • A fridge-cold mask for ten minutes on a puffy morning face.

How long

15–20 minutes. Not until it dries: a dry sheet pulls water back out of the skin. Take it off, press the leftover serum in by hand, then seal with a cream. Do not rinse.

How often

Two or three times a week is enough. Daily does no harm but adds nothing; the fragrance in the packet can bother sensitive skin daily.

Ingredients by skin type

Expensive or cheap

The price is mostly the sheet material (bio-cellulose, hydrogel) and the brand; the effect is in the serum. Three cheap hydrating masks a week do more than one expensive mask a month. "Daily" packs of 30 are the best value.

Mistakes

  • Lying on the phone under a mask for 40 minutes.
  • Treating a mask as treatment; marks and acne need a regular serum.
  • Reusing an opened packet tomorrow: bacteria; once only.

Sources

  • The occlusion of a sheet mask raises skin hydration temporarily; the effect is measured in hours, not days, in instrument-based dermatology studies.
  • American Academy of Dermatology: fragrance is a common cause of contact dermatitis on sensitive skin.
Cosmetics only, never medical advice.
