Layering: Which Step Comes First?
Thin to thick: cleanser, then a serum or active, then moisturizer, and sunscreen last in the morning. Three to five steps are enough; toner is optional and long waiting times are not needed.

The basic order
- Morning: cleanser (or water) → serum or active, if you use one → moisturizer → sunscreen.
- Night: cleanser → serum or active, if you use one → moisturizer.
- Eye cream, if you use one, goes after serum and before or with moisturizer.
Why this order
Honestly, there is no large study on step order; it is a practical rule. Actives work best close to clean skin, and thicker creams on top hold water in. One rule is firm: sunscreen stays on top so it forms an even film.
How many steps are enough
You do not need a seven- or ten-step routine. More products mean more chances of irritation and of doubling up on the same active. For most people, cleanser, moisturizer and sunscreen, plus one or two actives if needed, is plenty.
Toner and essence
A hydrating toner or essence is a thin humectant layer: keep it if you like it, skip it if not. An acid toner is really an exfoliant, so not on the same night as another exfoliant.
Waiting between layers
There is no evidence that waiting 10 to 20 minutes improves results. Give each layer a moment to settle so the next one does not pill. Put sunscreen on about 15 minutes before going out; that is the only timing rule worth keeping.
Which actives go morning or night
- Retinoids (including retinol): night only; light breaks them down.
- AHA and BHA: usually at night; if used in the morning, sunscreen is a must.
- Vitamin C: usually morning, under sunscreen; night also works.
- Niacinamide and azelaic acid: morning or night.
Questions people ask
Does sunscreen go before or after moisturizer?
After. Sunscreen is the last skincare step in the morning; makeup, if any, goes on top.
Do I need a toner?
No, toner is optional. With a good cleanser and moisturizer, most skin gets little extra from it.
