Moisturizer: Gel, Lotion or Cream?

Oily skin also benefits from moisturizer; it just needs a lighter texture. Gel or gel-cream in hot humid months, cream in winter or for dry skin: choose by how your skin feels.

What a moisturizer does

The top layer of skin works like a brick wall: cells are the bricks and the fats (lipids) between them are the mortar. Moisturizer helps that wall hold water, so tightness, roughness and stinging ease. It matters even more when you use actives such as retinoids or acids.

Three kinds of ingredients, three jobs

  • Humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid, urea) draw water into the skin's top layer.
  • Emollients (squalane, ceramides, some oils) fill gaps and smooth the surface.
  • Occlusives (petrolatum, dimethicone, shea butter) form a thin film that slows water loss.
  • Most good moisturizers contain some of each; the balance decides whether it feels light or rich.

Which texture for Bangladesh's seasons

March to October is hot and humid: oil goes up and skin loses less water, so many people find a gel or gel-cream comfortable. In the dry December-January winter skin loses water faster, and a thicker lotion or cream feels better. Changing texture is not changing your routine; it is just adjusting the weight.

  • Gel: lightest, for oily skin and hot months.
  • Lotion or gel-cream: in between, for combination or balanced skin.
  • Cream: richer, for dry skin and winter.

Why oily skin still needs it

Oil (sebum) and water (hydration) are different things. A shiny face can still be short on water, especially with harsh cleansers or actives. A light gel moisturizer labelled non-comedogenic usually does not add shine.

When and how much

  • Within a minute or two of washing, while skin is slightly damp.
  • A little more than a pea-sized amount covers face and neck; add a bit more on dry patches.
  • In the morning sunscreen goes on after it; at night it is the last step.
  • There is no single standard behind "non-comedogenic", so patch-test anything new.

Questions people ask

Can moisturizer cause acne?

Some heavy, oil-rich creams can clog pores on acne-prone skin. Light gels and lotions usually do not, and alongside acne actives they reduce irritation so you can stick with the routine.

Do I need a separate night cream?

No. One moisturizer works morning and night. Dry skin may like something richer at night, but it is optional.
