By what you need
- A Simple Beginner RoutineMorning: cleanse, moisturize, sunscreen. Night: cleanse and moisturize. Keep only this for the first few weeks; actives come later, one at a time.
- Routine for Oily SkinOily skin needs comfort too: a gentle gel cleanser, a light moisturizer and a thin sunscreen. Overwashing and harsh products do not reduce oil.
- Routine for Dry SkinA creamy cleanser, a moisturizer that both draws in and holds water, and sunscreen. Avoid hot water and harsh foaming cleansers.
- Routine for Sensitive SkinFewer products is better: a fragrance-free gentle cleanser, a plain moisturizer and sunscreen. No experimenting with acids, retinoids or scrubs while skin is stinging.
- Routine for Acne-Prone SkinA gentle cleanser, a light moisturizer and sunscreen, plus one acne ingredient at night, started slowly. Results usually take 6 to 8 weeks. Deep painful spots or scarring need a doctor.
- Routine for Pigmentation-Prone SkinSunscreen is the base of this routine: daily, generous and reapplied. Marks take 3 to 6 months to fade, with no guarantees; matching patches on both cheeks (possibly melasma) need a clinician's assessment.
- Barrier Support RoutineSkin stinging, tight or peeling? Pause all actives for 2 to 4 weeks and keep only a gentle cleanser, a ceramide-glycerin moisturizer and sunscreen.
- Routine After FortyWith age skin gets a bit drier and renews more slowly; that is normal, not a problem. The base stays the same: gentle washing, a good moisturizer, daily sunscreen, and if you want, a retinoid at night, started slowly.
