Cleansing: How Often and With What

For most people, washing twice a day with a gentle cleanser is enough. Washing more often rarely reduces oil, and it can leave skin tight and stinging.

What cleansing is actually for

A cleanser removes sweat, dust, sunscreen, makeup and built-up oil so the next steps sit on clean skin. Its job is not to make skin feel "squeaky clean". If your face feels very tight after washing, the cleanser is also stripping the skin's own oils and protective layer.

How to wash

  • Use lukewarm or room-temperature water, not hot water.
  • Apply with your fingertips and move gently; no scrubbing needed.
  • Rinse well and pat dry with a clean towel.
  • Put on moisturizer while skin is still slightly damp.
  • In the morning, if your skin feels dry or comfortable, a plain water rinse is fine.

The overwashing loop

Many people wash again every time their face looks shiny. The shine comes back, so they wash again. Oil production depends mostly on hormones, age and weather, not on how often you wash. Washing more does not reduce oil; it only adds dryness and irritation.

  • Signs: tightness after washing, stinging when moisturizer goes on, flaking beside the nose while the forehead still shines.
  • What to do: go back to twice a day with a gentle cleanser and moisturize after each wash.
  • If you feel oily midday, press with a tissue or blotting paper instead of washing again.

Does everyone need double cleansing?

No. Double cleansing means removing makeup and sunscreen first with an oil, balm or micellar water, then washing with a regular cleanser. No study shows everyone needs it. It helps at night if you wore water-resistant sunscreen or long-wear makeup. An everyday sunscreen often comes off with one thorough wash.

  • Only at night, never in the morning.
  • For dry or sensitive skin, one gentle wash is usually kinder.
  • Two foaming cleansers back to back is not double cleansing; it is just washing twice.

After a dusty, sweaty commute

Everyone in Dhaka meets dust, smoke and sweat on the road. You do not need to wash with cleanser three times a day. One gentle wash in the evening when you get home removes dust, sweat and sunscreen. Sweat itself is not dirt, but long hours of sweat and rubbing under a helmet, mask or hijab can add to breakouts, so rinse with water after heavy sweating.

  • Midday: rinse with water or blot sweat with a clean tissue.
  • If you are going back out in daylight, reapply sunscreen after rinsing.
  • Change pillowcases and face towels regularly.

Picking a cleanser type

  • Oily or combination skin, hot humid months: a light gel or mild foaming cleanser.
  • Dry skin or winter: a creamy or milky cleanser.
  • Skin that stings easily: a fragrance-free cleanser with a short ingredient list.
  • Avoid harsh bar soaps, gritty scrubs and cleansers that foam like detergent.
  • Cleansers with salicylic acid or benzoyl peroxide stay on skin only briefly, but they still count as actives, so factor them in with your other actives.

Questions people ask

Does oily skin need more washing?

Usually not. Twice a day is enough, with a water rinse after heavy sweating. Extra washing does not reduce oil; it just makes skin drier and more irritable.

Is it fine to wash my face with bar soap?

Many bar soaps are quite alkaline and can leave the face tight and dry. A gentle, fragrance-free facial cleanser is usually more comfortable.

Do I have to use cleanser in the morning?

No. If you washed at night, a water rinse is enough in the morning for many people. Use a gentle cleanser if your skin wakes up very oily or sweaty.
