Routine for Acne-Prone Skin

A gentle cleanser, a light moisturizer and sunscreen, plus one acne ingredient at night, started slowly. Results usually take 6 to 8 weeks. Deep painful spots or scarring need a doctor.

What each ingredient does

  • Salicylic acid: loosens oil and dead cells inside pores, for blackheads and small bumps.
  • Benzoyl peroxide: reduces acne bacteria, for red, pus-filled spots; it can bleach fabric and pillowcases.
  • Azelaic acid: helps both acne and the marks it leaves, usually well tolerated.
  • Retinoids (such as adapalene): central in acne guidelines but irritating; best started with a doctor's advice. Not during pregnancy, while planning one or while breastfeeding.

How long to wait

Improvement usually takes 4 to 6 weeks, clearly fewer breakouts 6 to 8 weeks, and mostly clear skin 2 to 3 months or longer. Switching products every week gives none of them time to work.

Habits that make acne worse

  • Picking or squeezing raises the risk of marks and scars.
  • Hair oil on the forehead can add to hairline breakouts.
  • Several acne products at once.
  • Lemon, toothpaste or other home remedies.

Simple routine

Morning

  1. 1
    Gentle cleanser

Scrubbing and overwashing do not clear acne; they add irritation.

  2. 2
    Light non-comedogenic moisturizer

Offsets dryness from acne ingredients so you can stick with them.

  3. 3
    Sunscreen

Brown marks left after acne darken in the sun.

Evening

  1. 1
    Cleanser

    Removes sunscreen, sweat and oil.

  2. 2
One acne ingredient: salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide or azelaic acid

Start 2 to 3 nights a week; not more than one at a time.

  3. 3
    Moisturizer

If it stings, you can put moisturizer on first and the active over it.

Questions people ask

Will this routine clear acne marks?

Flat brown marks fade slowly with sunscreen and time, over months. Pitted or raised scars do not go with creams; they need a dermatologist's procedures.
