Learn the Basics That Matter
Understand the reason behind common skincare steps, from washing your face to sunscreen.
Start with cleansingStart with these three
- Cleansing: How Often and With WhatFor most people, washing twice a day with a gentle cleanser is enough. Washing more often rarely reduces oil, and it can leave skin tight and stinging.
- Moisturizer: Gel, Lotion or Cream?Oily skin also benefits from moisturizer; it just needs a lighter texture. Gel or gel-cream in hot humid months, cream in winter or for dry skin: choose by how your skin feels.
- Sunscreen Questions AnsweredEvery morning, as the last step: a broad-spectrum sunscreen of SPF 30 or higher, in a real amount (two finger-lengths for face and neck). Outdoors, reapply every 2 hours and after sweating. Clouds do not block most UV.
Next, if you need them
- Exfoliation: AHA, BHA, PHA Without Overdoing ItExfoliation is optional. If you do it, start with one exfoliant, at night, once or twice a week; skip it while skin is irritated, and always wear sunscreen the next morning.
- Testing New Skincare CarefullyApply a new product to a small patch on your inner arm twice a day for 7 to 10 days. No reaction lowers the risk but is not a guarantee, because facial skin can react differently.
- Layering: Which Step Comes First?Thin to thick: cleanser, then a serum or active, then moisturizer, and sunscreen last in the morning. Three to five steps are enough; toner is optional and long waiting times are not needed.
- Ingredient Combinations: What to Pair, What to Space OutMost online "never mix" rules are myths. The real risk is stacking several irritating actives at once: acids, retinoids and scrubs on the same night.
The most common mistakes
- Washing too oftenOil stays; tightness arrives.
- Three washes after a dusty commuteOne evening wash is enough.
- Double cleansing for everyoneOnly at night, after waterproof sunscreen or makeup.
- Skipping sunscreen on cloudy daysMost UV gets through light cloud.
- Stacking many activesOne of the commonest causes of irritation.
How to learn this
One topic a week. First cleansing, moisturizer and sunscreen: most skin does well with just these three. Before adding anything new, read patch testing and which ingredients go together.
