Myth vs fact
- Myth
- A ceramide cream will clear any rash or long-term skin disease.
- Fact
- No. Ceramides can make dry, tight skin more comfortable, but eczema, psoriasis or a rash that won't settle needs a doctor.
What it is
Think of the top layer of skin as a brick wall: cells are the bricks, and ceramides, cholesterol and fatty acids are the mortar. Labels may list Ceramide NP, AP, EOP or Phytosphingosine.
What it does
It helps fill gaps in the barrier, cutting water loss and dryness. Several studies found less dryness after a few weeks with ceramide moisturisers. Formulas that pair ceramides with cholesterol and fatty acids are thought to work better.
Often discussed for
This doesn't mean everyone with these needs it.
How to approach it
Apply as a moisturiser after cleansing, once or twice a day as your skin needs. The formula and texture should suit your skin.
Morning or evening
Morning and night both work. If you use a retinoid or an acid, it can be especially comforting at night.
If you're new to it
This is usually easy to add, but patch test any new product first. Don't start several new things at once, or you won't know which one caused a problem.

Use carefully with
Stacking several actives raises the risk of irritation. If you're on any prescribed medicine, ask your doctor before adding an active.
- May feel heavy on very oily skin
- Safe in pregnancy
Possible reactions
Reactions are uncommon, but anyone can be allergic to any ingredient, and the trouble often comes from something else in the formula, such as fragrance. Stop if you get a red rash, itching or burning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or trouble breathing, needs urgent medical care.

Questions people ask
Can oily skin use ceramides?
Yes. Choose a light lotion or gel-cream rather than a heavy cream.
Can I use ceramides with retinol or acids?
Yes, it's a common pairing. A ceramide moisturiser can help with the dryness actives cause.
