Myth vs fact
- Myth
- Glycerin seals moisture in.
- Fact
- Not quite. Glycerin draws in and holds water (a humectant). Sealing water in with a surface layer is the occlusive's job, and softening is the emollient's. Good moisturisers usually combine all three.
What it is
Glycerin (glycerol) is a simple, clear, sweet-tasting liquid. It's in almost every kind of skincare, from cleansers to creams.
What it does
It pulls water into the top layer of skin and holds it there, keeps barrier lipids flexible and helps barrier repair. It's one of the best-studied moisturising ingredients.

How to approach it
It's normally applied as part of a moisturiser or serum. Pure glycerin is sticky, and studies used it mixed into formulas.

Morning and night, any time.
If you're new to it
This is usually easy to add, but patch test any new product first. Don't start several new things at once, or you won't know which one caused a problem.

Use carefully with
Stacking several actives raises the risk of irritation. If you're on any prescribed medicine, ask your doctor before adding an active.

- Safe in pregnancy
Possible reactions
Reactions are uncommon, but anyone can be allergic to any ingredient, and the trouble often comes from something else in the formula, such as fragrance. Stop if you get a red rash, itching or burning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or trouble breathing, needs urgent medical care.

Evidence comes from studies of specific formulas and strengths. Your product may behave differently.
Questions people ask
Can I put pure glycerin on my face?
Pure glycerin feels sticky and heavy. It's meant as a formula ingredient; a finished moisturiser is easier.
What's the difference between a humectant and an emollient?
Humectants (glycerin, hyaluronic acid) draw in water; emollients (squalane) soften skin and fill gaps. Our guide explains more.
