Myth vs fact

Myth
Squalane is all your skin needs to stay hydrated.
Fact
No. Squalane softens skin and slows water loss, but it doesn't draw water in. That's the job of humectants such as glycerin or hyaluronic acid. And not everyone likes the feel of an oil.

What it is

Squalene is part of skin's own oil. Squalane is its stabilised form, which doesn't spoil easily. It's usually made from olives or sugarcane.

What it does

It forms a light layer that makes skin smoother and softer and slows some water loss. Research is mostly reviews and lab work.

Often discussed for

This doesn't mean everyone with these needs it.

How to approach it

As part of a moisturiser, or a few drops of pure squalane mixed into or over your moisturiser. How much depends on your skin and the weather.

Morning or evening

Morning or night. In Dhaka heat, oily skin may prefer less by day and more at night.

If you're new to it

This is usually easy to add, but patch test any new product first. Don't start several new things at once, or you won't know which one caused a problem.

General education, not a diagnosis or treatment plan.

Examples of common pairings, not guaranteed combinations.

Use carefully with

Stacking several actives raises the risk of irritation. If you're on any prescribed medicine, ask your doctor before adding an active.

  • None; prefer squalane (stable) over squalene
  • Safe in pregnancy

Possible reactions

Reactions are uncommon, but anyone can be allergic to any ingredient, and the trouble often comes from something else in the formula, such as fragrance. Stop if you get a red rash, itching or burning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or trouble breathing, needs urgent medical care.

Questions people ask

Are squalane and squalene the same?

Nearly, but squalene spoils easily in air. Skincare prefers stable squalane.

Does it clog pores?

It's generally known as low-clogging, but people differ. If new bumps appear, use less.
