Myth vs fact
- Myth
- Hyaluronic acid replaces a moisturiser.
- Fact
- No. It draws water in, but oils and other moisturiser ingredients keep that water from escaping. In dry or air-conditioned air, hyaluronic acid on its own can leave skin feeling tighter.
What it is
Skin makes hyaluronic acid naturally. Labels usually list Sodium Hyaluronate or Hydrolyzed Hyaluronic Acid, which are different molecule sizes.
What it does
It holds water at the surface, so skin feels plumper and softer right after applying. Some studies found better hydration after several weeks of regular use. Any effect on fine lines is small and temporary.

How to approach it
Many people apply it to slightly damp skin and follow with a moisturiser. It comes in serums, toners and creams; the formula matters most.
Morning or evening
Any time of day. Sealing it with a moisturiser matters more than the timing.
If you're new to it
This is usually easy to add, but patch test any new product first. Don't start several new things at once, or you won't know which one caused a problem.

- Fits most routines
Use carefully with
Stacking several actives raises the risk of irritation. If you're on any prescribed medicine, ask your doctor before adding an active.
- Seal with a moisturiser in dry or air-conditioned air
- Safe in pregnancy
Possible reactions
Reactions are uncommon, but anyone can be allergic to any ingredient, and the trouble often comes from something else in the formula, such as fragrance. Stop if you get a red rash, itching or burning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or trouble breathing, needs urgent medical care.

Questions people ask
Is hyaluronic acid okay for oily skin?
Yes, it isn't an oil. Oily skin can still be dehydrated, and a light gel texture can feel comfortable.
Why does my skin feel tight after using it?
That can happen in very dry air or without a moisturiser on top. Seal it with a moisturiser.
Does it remove wrinkles for good?
No. Holding water can make lines look softer for a while, but the effect is temporary.
