Peptides: Science vs Hype
Copper peptide · GHK-Cu · Matrixyl · Matrixyl 3000 · Argireline
Peptides are a large family; their cosmetic evidence depends on which peptide and which preparation. Evidence varies by formula and concern.

Myth vs fact
- Myth
- All peptides erase wrinkles.
- Fact
- No. Some peptides showed slightly softer-looking lines over 12 weeks in small studies, many funded by brands. The evidence isn't as strong as for retinoids or sunscreen.
What it is
Peptides are short pieces of protein. Labels show names like Palmitoyl Pentapeptide-4 (Matrixyl), Copper Tripeptide-1 (copper peptide, GHK-Cu) or Acetyl Hexapeptide-8 (Argireline). Each is claimed to work differently.
What it does
Some peptides are thought to signal skin cells to make collagen; copper peptide may play a role in repair. Results are slow and modest. It is nothing like injections or in-clinic procedures.

How to approach it
Usually in a serum or cream, once or twice a day. Which peptide it is and how stable the formula is matter most.
Morning or evening
Morning or evening both work. Keep copper peptides apart from pure vitamin C or strong acids; use them at different times.
If you're new to it
This is usually easy to add, but patch test any new product first. Don't start several new things at once, or you won't know which one caused a problem.

Examples of common pairings, not guaranteed combinations.
Use carefully with
Stacking several actives raises the risk of irritation. If you're on any prescribed medicine, ask your doctor before adding an active.
- Pure vitamin C (L-ascorbic acid) (in the same session, for copper peptides)
- Strong acids (in the same session)
- Very low risk
- Copper peptide oxidises vitamin C — apply separately
- Safe in pregnancy
Possible reactions
Reactions are uncommon, but anyone can be allergic to any ingredient, and the trouble often comes from something else in the formula, such as fragrance. Stop if you get a red rash, itching or burning. Swelling of the face, lips or eyes, or trouble breathing, needs urgent medical care.
When to see a doctorEvidence and timing

- Time to see a change (weeks)
- 8-12
Evidence comes from studies of specific formulas and strengths. Your product may behave differently.
Questions people ask
Peptides or retinol?
Retinol has much stronger evidence for fine lines, but it irritates more and isn't for pregnancy. Peptides are gentler, with weaker evidence.
Does Argireline work like Botox?
No. Its studies are small, and a cream on the skin can't be compared with an injection.
